Uncharted 3 Beta Impressions

For about two weeks I've been playing the Uncharted 3 Beta that is available on the PlayStation Store and I must say that I'm having a blast playing it. Everything I love about the multi player of Uncharted 2 is still there in UC3, but obviously it's the new stuff that is on display in the beta for Uncharted 3 that makes the existing formula better.

There were a couple of ways to get into the beta. Either purchase inFAMOUS 2 or have PlayStation Plus. Even if you didn't have PlayStation Plus, you should have picked it up off of the PlayStation Store when Sony introduced the Welcome Back program. You would have received 30 days of Plus for free and you would have been able to download and play the Uncharted 3 beta.

Continue after the break for more of my thoughts on the Beta and also share your opinions in the comments below the article.

First up is the customization tools that allow you to change how your multi player avatar looks all the way down to your weapon load outs and the perks/boosters that you can equip to mold your character to your liking. Of course you have to earn a rank to unlock the chance to purchase that perk/booster to equip. So just like UC2 you will spend many, many a night leveling up and buying upgrades, taunts, boosters, perks, abilities and more.

Next up is the weapon selection. The weapons from the UC2 are here, but they have added new sniper rifles, new handguns, new shotguns and new heavy weapons. So the original 10 (or so) weapons you had from UC2 have increased to 17 (I believe). With the increase in weapon number it caused players to actually try out different weapons and combinations resulting a very rare occasions of "same ole tactics" from every player. I still found that people ran to the power weapons (once you know where they are at), but that is just natural. They are called power weapons for a reason and for the ones who don't know what I mean by power weapon it would be things like RPGs, Grenade Launcher, Pistole, etc.

My favorite additions work together hand in hand. Power Plays and the Kickback system. If you excel at playing and get 5 kills in a row, you active a power play for your team. For example your team could be struggling to move ahead of the opposing team(s), but you hit 5 kills straight. That triggers a Power Play for your team and something like "Opposing Players Revealed" allowing you to see all of the other players all over the level. Some last longer than others, but they can really help turn the tide of a match up.

Kickbacks also provide another level of rewards while in a match. The important thing about this little feature though doesn't tie to whether you are good at the game or not. You could be lucky or just down right terrible and still activate this. While playing a match you will be running around, interacting with the game world. Treasure chests will appear, special kills will happen, team kills, etc. Picking up random treasures grants you 1 treasure point, opening a treasure chest grants you 3, etc. Once you have enough points, you can push up on the D-pad and activate your Kickback ability. This is set before the match begins and more and be unlocked the longer you play. The first Kickback ability gives you access to an instant 2-shot RPG.

All in all. I'm even more in love with Uncharted 3 than I was with Uncharted 2. While Naughty Dog didn't try to re-invent the wheel. They did however refine what they had in 2, plus added new things that really have helped spice up UC3.

After I started typing this up Naughty Dog introduced Co-Op adventure and a few other Co-Op and competitive modes. I unfortunately didn't get enough time to really play much of them to write more about the Beta here, but I highly recommend that every PS3 owner goes out and buys Uncharted 3 over games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations and even the amazing Battlefield 3. Uncharted 3 hits November 1st, 2011.
